Painting large pots can add charm to any home’s exterior or garden. Monarch’s latest Renew in 2 project will not only show you how to paint pots beautifully but also in a way that will make them last longer.
If you’re using water-based paint soak your brush in an inch of water for 10-15min, then remove and spin in between your hands to remove excess water. If you’re using oil-based paint, follow the same steps using turps instead of water.
If you’re renewing an old pot, scrape or sand off any old paint that’s flaking to create a smooth surface. Then wash with Monarch sugar soap and leave to dry completely before moving on to the next step. If you’re updating a new pot, just give it a good dust to ensure the surface is clean before you paint.
Using your Monarch Smart lock foam mini roller, apply your first colour over the whole pot. It’s better to use 2 coats of lighter colour for this step, to ensure that your second colour shines through.
Once you’ve decided on a design, whether it be stripes, geometric shapes, or simply two tones, lay your tape. Using a quality painters’ tape, tape along the outside edge of your design to ensure a clean edge.
Load the Monarch moulding & skirting brush with the feature colour paint you have chosen. Start by painting about one cm away from the tape, and then paint your way towards the tape. This ensures a thick coat of paint doesn’t get collected under the tape. Apply 2 coats of your feature colour, waiting in between coats until the paint is completely dry.
Remove the tape whilst the paint is still tacky - this reduces the risk of your paintwork ripping off. If the base paint comes off, simple touch up the affected areas using your brush.
Congratulations, you’re done! Scrape any leftover paint back into the tin for re-use. Wash your brushes and rollers thoroughly so you can use them for your next project.
